I just left Riley at the emergency vets.

Her ear blew up at some point, totally a mess, big hematoma. They're going to surgical resolve it and tack it down (I used to call it "quilting") and do some labwork to see if they can figure out why a healthy dog without an ear infection suddenly got a bleed.

I know she'll be fine, but I hate leaving her.

And her perfect little folded ear will be no more, destined to be a little funny looking for the rest of her life, poor thing.

Edit/Update: It was a rough night. She didn't handle sedation/anesthesia well at all, and we ended up getting home around 1am after she finally woke up. Better today.

Funny looking can be super fun! I hope she feels better really soon. Was it all hot and bothering her as well? Dang.

It was sore, I'm sure, and it would have healed funny no matter what. She's better today, and so far leaving her cone of shame intact. It's been a very rough night though, I'm ready to sleep for a week.

Oh no! We've been having a bad day too but just involving dead car battery and workmen making my daughter cry--nothing so serious as this ear. Heal quickly pup pup

Thanks. I'm grateful that after today I can spend some time at home with her (no work, no school for a few days).

Oh great! Right before Christmas! Very sad all round.

It's funny that little bit of grief that happens when you know you are going to look at your dog and it is never going to look the same, even way it used to. It surprises me every time anyway. Stupid attachment to bilateral symetry ;)

Like the first scar a dog gets, it's always kinda shocking.

Thinking of darling Riley and I hope you get her back soon. I'll give you both an Internet squeeze actually

You have this so exactly. I'm feeling silly for mourning it, but I am. It could be so much worse, you know, life threatening, but yeah, there you have it.

Thanks for getting it.

I have a friend that had a lab with chronic ear problems. She had to have her ear quilted.

This is only the second time I've ever heard of that.

I hope she feels better soon, and that her ear at least has good character!

That was some of the concern, she doesn't have ear infections, so we didn't know why she was having this. Turns out there was some damage to the ear cartilage, so she pinched it or banged it on something.

Oh poor Riley. I hope all went well and you will have a few days to spend with recovery. Keep us updated.

You're one of the few techs I know still practicing so I'm going to pick your brain. She had a bad reaction to a butorphanol/Dexdomitor combo, and they reversed it, but she was still apneic thereafter on isoflourine (but has never had a bad reaction to iso before, she had that molar pulled just this spring and was fine). Have you heard of that being an issue? Could it have been a dosing issue?

She also woke up really rough and they really tranked her to keep her calm enough to put the bandage on. She's still a little rough this morning.

Oh bummer - and bizarre! Hope she recovers quickly and at least the ear gives her a dashing 'bed head' look.

She's feeling much better today as she learns how to get her giant cone around the house (up the stairs is especially hard)

Poor Riley - I am sorry that you have this to deal with and the scariness or "what happened with the dosage?" - you will forever be worried about putting her under again. Yeah, get some answers...

I was going to suggest hematoma has usually been damaged cartilage in my experience - dobes get it and then we have that whole vWD issue on top. Poor Yoda - he was vWD +ve, no thryoid (dwarfed), bad liver and epiletpic - but never really looked sick - beautiful boy with his giant ears and glorious coats and markings - always fat though - so hard to get him trim.

Hope Riley gets better very fast - everything - ear and anaesthesia reaction especially.

Thank you. When I worked clinical, I only ever saw these in dogs with terrible ear infections, and I just couldn't figure out how Riley got hers. I still don't know the injury, but if she got it pinched or something, well then. At least (to my knowledge) she doesn't have bleeding issues.

And yes, I'm dreading the bandage change later this week that will require some sedation too. Ugh.

Poor Riley and poor you, too much worry! I'm glad you will be able to be with her after today, that will make it much easier for both of you. We have had our own ear issues this week, but nothing so dramatic.
