I was feeling like Jodah had plateaued with his "polite leash walking" training, but last night, he was "present" enough to check in with me frequently in our outbound walk! That was a first, usually he's just able to give me attention on the return trip, the best I could hope for was "not pulling." It is good to notice some progress, one day he'll be a real dog. Of course, this is in the familiar neighborhood on our usual route, but hey, I'll take any improvement I can.

One thing we've both enjoyed a lot is when I drive him up to the wooded neighborhood park and let him run on the flexi around the path. He gets a ton of exercise, and it's a bit of relief from the "walk nicely" training and attention, you know? I don't have to be 100% on, and can just enjoy walking with him.

And Riley is indeed famous! I got my copy of Fenzi's (highly marketed!) new book, and Riley's picture is in it, in the glossary next to the entry for "obsessive compulsive disorder." (LOL). The book itself seems pretty good, and all the photographs make it a lot of fun to leaf through.

I'm so glad the leashed walking is progressing. There's a wonderful thing about a dog that just doesn't yank you down any road/sidewalk/path. You feel like the walk belongs to BOTH of you, and that you're not just a very unwanted accessory! ;)

Yesterday I took Rums on a walk I'd done with Razor before, but new to the Peanut. It was just the two of us, and it was LOVELY! the only thing he pulled toward was the creek (for a drink) and he often has a lot of attention on me. I feel like we're "together" and I love it. The same walk with Razor was very different. VERY because...

SQUIRRELS!! yeah, I'm merely and anchor to keep him from going up trees --- sucks.

Yes, exactly! Jodah is so environmentally sensitive that it's just being OUTSIDE that ramps him up over the edge. Riley can be like Razor for squirrels, hah, but generally she's much more connected. I'm happy to see progress, too, it's been very slow coming.

I would take "not pulling" from Merc. Goober boys. :-) And yes, I think dogs deserve some time to enjoy a walk their own way too.

Oh, for sure. My walks are not formal affairs. But right now, on a normal 4 or 6 foot leash, Jodah doesn't have any middle room between "over-stimmed bounce back and forth against the limits of the leash" and working with me. That middle room is the ultimate goal (and he does it pretty well on a 30 foot flexi, heh). But for right now, working for short stretches every few steps is how we're approaching it. And working is not dry and boring, he loves it, and is choosing it more and more.

Heh. It has taken forever. We do train other things, I swear, but it's the thing I care most about right now.
